Become a WIRA Member

It's easy to become a WIRA member.

  1. Fill out our online application to join WIRA
  2. Arrange for off-line payment of your membership.
  3. We will confirm activation of your membership by e-mail, so you can enjoy unlimited access to WIRA data.

Member benefits
WIRA caters primarily to its members. For a modest annual fee, members gain access to the most current, detailed information on Canadian water-related injuries and fatalities through a password-protected area of this Web site. Would you like to see samples of this information? You can preview a sample data table, a sample layout of the WIRA database or a complete table of contents for the incident facts on which we provide data.

Member benefits include:

  • Access to data on injuries, rescues and fatalities that is not available elsewhere.
  • Access to data tables that are highly relevant to members; they can pick the scope/frame of reference they want (e.g., boating, public pools, local, regional, etc.).
  • Quick and current information - our tabulated data is updated frequently on our Web site, so it is always up-to-date.
  • Information that is rich in depth and easy to navigate with the member predefined query set.
  • Easy-to-access information - not only is it available for viewing on-line, data can be downloaded for members to use in their own reports.
  • Data that is easy to format and work with - members can download graphs and charts displaying WIRA data, as well as the data tables.
  • Upon request, customized data reports can be tailored to the unique information needs of a particular member.
  • All WIRA members have input on WIRA's future. Our members are  key stakeholders, who elect our board of directors and vote on WIRA's key business policy decisions at our annual general meetings.

Who should become a member?
Anyone who wants quick, easy access to up-to-date data on water-related incidents involving injuries, rescues and fatalities. The data and services WIRA offers are useful to organizations such as:

  • federal, provincial and municipal government departments and agencies;
  • not-for-profit agencies, organizations and associations, including regional, county and local health units; boating, aquatic and recreational agencies; search-and-rescue organizations; injury-prevention foundations; researchers; medical and hospital associations; coroners; cottage associations;
  • educational institutions;
  • private sector corporations, such as marine, boating and recreational products manufacturers; sponsors of water-related activities; insurance companies; consultants;
  • international organizations.

In large organizations, each individual who needs direct access to WIRA's online data should apply for his or her own member license. This will enable each member in an organization or association to access the data independently, from his or her own computer. Only members can log on and access WIRA's detailed data. Each separate e-mail address used to log on is considered a separate WIRA member.

If you're hesitating on becoming a member, remember that WIRA is a not-for-profit organization formed to collect and publish water-related incident and injury data for those interested in having quick, easy access to such data. Our ongoing operation is funded through membership fees. WIRA can only continue to provide this data with ongoing member support.

Members enjoy major shared-cost economies of scale. The fees received from each member contribute toward the cost of generating and providing WIRA data. These fees help develop the depth and breadth of data that members can access, which is more than any single organization could create on its own. If you want and need WIRA data, we would like to have you as a member.
